The village of Estercuel is located on the northern foothills of the Sierra de San Just (Iberian System), occupying a hill overlooking the river of the same name, Zarzosa as some call it, and crowned by the mansion of the castle that once belonged to the Atrosillo family.
With a population of 386 inhabitants, the village is situated at an altitude of 829 meters above sea level and covers an area of 55.9 km2. The distance by road to Teruel is 120 kilometers. It can be accessed via the N-420 and N-211 roads (from Gargallo to Estercuel there is a diversion via the TE-V 1332).
In its territory lies the important Mercedarian monastery of El Olivar, where Tirso de Molina set “La dama del Olivar” (The Lady of the Olive Grove). The reality of Estercuel is closely linked to the mining history of this area in Teruel. Its long-standing agricultural and livestock traditions, though declining, have somewhat revived with the construction of an olive oil mill operating as a cooperative.
